How do I revoke Power of Attorney in India?

To revoke a Power of Attorney in India,  register the “REVOCATION OF POWER OF ATTORNEY

Generally, Power of attorney (POA) is executed in two types, they are

  1. Local power of attorney (it means that POA is executed and registered within India)
  2. Foreign power of attorney (It means that POA is executed & attested in foreign country)

Let me explain the revocation procedure for both types of POA.


Below is the procedure to revoke local POA:

Step 1: Prepare the revocation draft in Word format. The draft looks like the below image.

Step 2: Submit the application in sub-registrar office for registration of “Revocation of POA”

Step 3: Pay the government fee (subject to Karnataka)

  • Stamp duty: Rs.1000
  • Registration fee: Rs.200
  • Scanning fee: Rs. 35 per page

Step 4: Print the POA draft on document paper for registration

Step 5: Carry the following documents to sub-registrar office

  • Revocation of Power of attorney (printed draft on document paper)
  • Application summary report
  • Transaction receipt
  • Aadhaar
  • Two witnesses and their Aadhaar

Step 6: Register the “revocation of power of attorney”

The executant, attorney and two witnesses sign the “Revocation Power of Attorney”.

This completes the registration of “revocation of power of attorney”.


Below is the procedure to revoke foreign power of attorney

Step 1: Prepare the revocation draft in Word format. A draft looks like the below image

Step 2: Print the draft on normal A4 size paper

Step 3: Get the POA attested from Indian consulate or notary public in your country.

Step 4: Send the attested POA to India through reputed courier

Step 5: Your local assistant in India, should carry the following documents to District Registrar Office (DRO)

  • Revocation of power of attorney (came from foreign)
  • Stamp duty payment receipt
  • Passport copy of executant
  • Requisition letter (refer to the below mock)

Step 6: DRO adjudicates “revocation of power of attorney”. An adjudication looks like the below image.

The adjduication fee in Karnataka is Rs.500 per executant

This completes the procedure to revoke power of attorney from foreign country.
